Climathon Buenos Aires 2023 - Event summary

On the 27th, 28th and 31st, the Climathon global event was held for the first time in the vibrant City of Buenos Aires, where 15 teams made up of 6 participants met to address two crucial challenges: the impact of our diet on the climate change and adaptation to rising urban temperatures.

Through the Design Thinking methodology, these teams worked to conceive innovative solutions that promote sustainability and local resilience.

Challenge 1: How does what we eat in the city impact climate change?

The first challenge posed at Climathon 2023 addressed the relationship between our diet and climate change. The teams explored a wide spectrum of solutions, from waste management and composting to implementing biodigesters and promoting plant-based diets. Reducing waste, promoting sustainable production practices and encouraging conscious consumption were also prominent topics. These approaches are intended to transform the way we eat in the city, promoting a more environmentally friendly lifestyle.

Challenge 2: Where and how do we live with rising temperatures?

The second challenge focused on adaptation to increasing urban temperatures, an increasingly relevant problem in a world in constant climate change. Participants devised solutions to mitigate the well-known "heat islands" in urban areas, proposing innovative strategies and promoting the adoption of sustainable architecture. These proposals aim to create habitable and comfortable environments, even in conditions of extreme temperatures, while reducing the environmental impact.

Climathon 2023 in the City of Buenos Aires was an inspiring and transformative event, where creativity and innovation came together to address local climate challenges with solutions of global reach.

During the event, +100 people participated under Networking, mentoring and pitch instances; 8 innovative solutions for local action were devised, 4 of those solutions were selected as finalists, with 1 idea winning a prize of $500,000 for its implementation.

Those who participated demonstrated that, through Design Thinking and collective commitment, it is possible to conceive projects that contribute significantly to the construction of a more sustainable and resilient present and future.

We are very excited to see how these ideas are translated into concrete actions that promote positive change in our community and around the world.

Thanks to all the people who participated and contributed their knowledge and ideas to create great projects!
